More Millenials Are Getting Diagnosed with HIV

April 2017 statistics are saying that 629 Filipinos, 80% of which are millenials, were diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Department of Health (DOH) reported.

513 newly-diagnosed HIV positive individuals apparently belongs within the range of 15-34 years old.

More than half of those diagnosed who acquired it through sexual contact appears to be men who have sex with another men.

This month, 17 deaths due to complications add up to 172 deaths listed early this year.

It is also recorded that 18 of the infected individuals acquired it by sharing needles, while 2 of which occurs as transmission from the mother to her child.

HIV targets our body's immune system which helps in fighting off infections. Vulnerability to infections and infection-related cancers is higher if left untreated.

This may develop to Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS if it totally weakens one's immune system.

Exchange of bodily fluids like blood, semen, and vaginal secretions pose risks for acquisition of the virus. This may occur in encountering unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing of infected needles, and mother-to-child transmission.

It has no cure but antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) are used to control its multiplication in your body.
